Establishing high performing teams
In part 1 of How to create high performing teams, I focused on the forming phase of Bruce Tuckman’s Forming – Storming – Norming – Performing team-development model . During the forming phase there’s a positive vibe, everyone’s feeling buoyant and excited at the prospect of a new journey. In this post I will outline what to expect during the storming phase which, as the adjective suggests is not plain sailing!
Character is formed in the stormy billows of the world
During the storming phase in order for the team to develop successfully, tolerance of individual members and their differences should be emphasised and compromise is essential.
It can be an unpleasant and even painful time for team members who are averse to conflict. People can feel displaced, there may be power struggles and it is important to remain focused on the teams’ goals to avoid distractions through relationship and emotional issues.
Team members instinctively feel “if you’re not one-up, you’re one-down”. Decisions don’t come easily as there is a need for them to prove their value and deliver their worth. They vie for position as they attempt to establish themselves in relation to others and in particular the leader.
Some teams will never develop past this phase
Whilst clarity of purpose increases within the team, if conflict or low morale exists it will become destructive and lower motivation. It is essential to inspire your people – enhance team productivity, morale and achieve a sense of belonging for all employees. Anticipate and prepare for conflict to prevent it from occurring altogether.
Banish conflict – turn negative reactions into positive actions
Be aware and remain tolerant of individual’s differences and reassure them that it is their own personality and thinking style that brings an important and unique contribution to the team.
